Antonio Vivaldi

Italian Concert Art at Its Finest

Antonio Vivaldi

Born in Venice, celebrated across Europe, and passing away in Vienna — Antonio Lucio Vivaldi stands as one of the quintessential composers of the Baroque era.
He composed around 500 concertos, and to this day, nearly 49 operas authored by him have been identified.

His works came to epitomize Italian concert art, and he secured his immortality with his masterpiece The Four Seasons.
Just a few months before his death, Vivaldi moved to Vienna, where he found his final resting place — only a stone’s throw from St. Charles Church.

Behind the Music

Antonio Vivaldi’s compositions are timeless masterpieces. Yet to truly unfold their full magic, they require not only the right setting but also exceptional musicians. Vivaldi Vienna offers both. The renowned Orchestra 1756 — praised by the press as “one of the finest Baroque orchestras of the past 30 years” — regularly brings The Four Seasons to life at Vienna’s St. Charles Church. Performed on authentic Baroque instruments in an original Baroque church — it doesn’t get any closer to the spirit of the time.

St. Charles Church — A Sacred Icon and Cultural Landmark

Considered one of the most important sacred buildings north of the Alps, St. Charles Church once served as the imperial parish church of Vienna. In 1716, following the end of the last great plague epidemic, Emperor Charles VI commissioned the construction of this magnificent church as an act of gratitude. Since its opening in 1737, St. Charles Church has evolved from a predominantly religious site into a vibrant cultural hub. Today, the church and the square in front of it are among Vienna’s most beloved venues for art and culture.
