Karlskirche

A Monument of Gratitude After the Plague

Following the end of Vienna’s last major plague epidemic, Emperor Charles VI commissioned the construction of Karlskirche in 1716 as an expression of gratitude. The architectural competition was won by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, one of the most important architects of the European Baroque era. After his death, his son Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach continued the project. The church was completed in 1737.

Today, Karlskirche is regarded as a masterpiece of Baroque architecture and one of Vienna’s most extraordinary concert venues. Its monumental dome, impressive frescoes, and remarkable acoustics create a unique setting for the regular Vivaldi concerts performed by Orchester 1756.

The exceptional acoustics of Karlskirche especially enhance the warm and authentic sound of historical instruments, making the church a unique venue for Baroque music performances.

Vivaldi’s Final Resting Place

Vienna’s Karlskirche has a unique historical connection to Antonio Vivaldi. The celebrated composer spent the final months of his life in Vienna and was buried in 1741 near the church at the former “Spitaller Gottsacker.” Today, a memorial plaque near the Vienna University of Technology commemorates his final resting place.

This proximity makes Karlskirche an extraordinary venue for the performance of Vivaldi’s music. The regular performances of “The Four Seasons” by Orchester 1756 uniquely combine historically informed performance practice, original sound worlds, and the composer’s history.
